Fernwood knows that one of the best forms of exercise that women can do is strength training. We don’t fuss around and call it by other names – because we know that strong women are typically leaner and healthier.
But not all strength training is equal. Rather than use other cheap hydraulic equipment – where you plateau after a short while – Fernwood Sydenham offers easy to use machines which allow you to progress.
Progression to heavier weights is an essential component of strength training. If you just do more of the same weights without increasing the weight, you are training for endurance, not strength, and after a while you won’t get the results you want.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced exerciser, cardio will give you a magical rush of feel-good endorphins in the process. But like any exercise, the secret is to go slowly. Get to a stage where you can walk briskly for half an hour, then spend a couple of sessions getting used to our treadmills, steppers, cross trainers, bikes and rowers.
You might start at a low intensity for two to five minutes, a higher intensity for two, then repeat that four or five times. Gradually increase your training time and shorten recovery periods. Before you know it, you’ll be going non-stop for 10 minutes. Aim to do cardio three times a week, but be guided by how you feel.

Weight machines are a great place to start out and allow you to progress, but after a while, using ‘free-weights’ (dumbbells and barbells) will take your workout to the next level. To get the best result in the shortest amount of time, the more muscles you engage in the one exercise, the better. With many free-weight exercises, you engage your stomach and back muscles too – so you can say goodbye to sit-ups!

Our cycle classes let you control your efforts, where the intensity is set to motivating music close to your workout heart rate, 120 to 140 B.P.M. We play all the popular music to help you exercise longer and more enthusiastically.

The eight-week program, which launches twice a year, focuses on intensity and endurance. While the physical and mental demands are broad and challenging, the camp is also great fun. Recruits are pushed to reach their peak physical fitness. The program package is designed to tone and tighten the body, and improve core strength and cardiovascular fitness by truly testing each recruit. Weight loss usually follows.
The real strength of Military Miss is the sense of belonging it triggers among recruits. They feel a great camaraderie and responsibility to one another. The group numbers are no more than 15.
The Military Miss Bootcamp experience is also open to non-members.
